Okigbo Writes Sandburg a Poem (to Chimalum)

BEFORE YOU, Carl Sandburg,
naked I sleep;
before your poetic presence,
a prodigal

leaning on your lines
lost in your words
Under your muse wait I
with pen and paper,
watchman for the magic words
wordsmith with your irons
at the fireplace;

out of the silence of our graves:
give ear and hearken…

let my living lines live and let live
and turn no more on your dusty bed

STILL WATERS of the end
