Great to have you around here surfing my webblog, including helping yourself with some of my links! If you’re yet to use some of those links, which will be expanded with time, start clicking on them now! Who knows? It might just be what you need to take a giant step on the rungs of the very long literary ladder! The Creative Writing Resources link, put together by myself, is specially meant to evolve you as a creative writer, especially the poet in you! Initially, I’d started working on what would have been a long list of writing tips for young, budding, upcoming, fledging, new (mention them) poets and writers, especially for the beginner from another Nigerian writer who has been toddling around the literary world for over 6 years now! Quite short, you would say!

However, I eventually decided to expose the targeted readers to some of my favourite web resources for creative writing, rather than a long list of dos and don’ts that may not meet your unique needs as a writer! Trust me, I’ve read many of them from many corners of the world, but most of them never seem to have someone like me in mind! Of course, I’ve got you in mind while working on this one! When you’re ready to start writing good poetry of your own, these links can get you started!

These resources have been immensely useful and helpful to me over the past six years as a growing mind in the writing business! I believe that young writers out there largely have the same growing needs which I also had, still have, and will continue to have if I must keep writing! In this way, I believe that the nurturing and development of the highly essential literary skills needed by creative writers to climb up the long literary ladder is more organised and sustainable in the long run. This is against the idea of having to personally meet the growing needs of the thousands of young and upcoming poets out there, which has been the challenge more established writers face on a daily basis!

Even as an upcoming voice myself, I have not been immune from such feedback requests from younger and newer writers! The other time I was surfing the pages of African Literature, when I read Tolulope Ogunlesi’s message over the same situation where writers of his own age or generation need feedback from him on writing generally or publishing opportunities! I have had to squeeze some time out to give feedbacks on works from younger and fresher voices myself, but with some feedback requests taking me months to reply in view of other engagements of mine. And sadly so! If I were the person making the same request and I didn’t get any feedback for over months, I am certainly not going to end up being the most fulfilled writer around! So, I strongly feel it was high time someone started meeting such needs in a more organised and time-effective manner to keep the needed encouragement and support on a more sustainable level. Don’t you think?

This is where the idea of the Creative Writing Resource comes in – to guide the upcoming creative writer by providing her with useful and helpful links she can always access to nurture, develop and sharpen her creative writing skills. I would have loved to feature links to all the literary genres but not for now! I have declared a ‘state of emmergency’ on the genre of poetry! It is my 1-point agenda! So, you want to write great poems like Gabriel Okara, Christopher Okigbo, Wole Soyinka, J.P. Clark, Kofi Anyidoho, Niyi Osundare and other notable poets out there? You want to carve the voice of your own in a unique niche that develops as you continue to grow in the writing craft?

Writing is a craft. Their is an art, according to Poetry Magic, Uk, that is concealed in the art. This concealment is what great writers, with their readers, have found highly pleasurable, engaging and rewarding in literature! To climb the literary ladder, the young and upcoming writer must take time to develop and evolve herself as a true writer who has over the years refined her creative talents and continues to find new modes of expression.

The literary critiques have repeatedly accused young writers as being too much in a hurry, thus churning out bad works that deserve no attention. Is it not time young writers began to look inwards by tapping into the immensely wide and valuable resources at their fingertips as well? I am not unaware of the publishing drought creative writers, especially the younger generation is facing (more so the genre of poetry), but two wrongs never make a right! If publishers have turned their eyes away from the younger generation because of their fear of venturing into the ‘risk’ euphemistically called new writers, then the challenge is for the new writer out there to continue evolving and refining her skills, not destroying it in an illusive vengeance to get published by any means! It is only by growing to be great writers in our own right that we can begin to have a genuinely challenged, inspired and motivated drive to hatch great ideas that can turn new writers into bestsellers in the book market! It has happened in other climes – it is only a matter of time!

The creative writing resources you will find here are mainly focused on poetry – where a state of emergency has been declared by me to save my own generation; and a bit of short fiction. The reason for this is not far-fetched. In Nigeria (just like most countries of the world) where the writer is based, their are so many crooning young poets everywhere! Secondly, literary critics have continually complained bitterly about the ‘poor and nauseating’ works ‘masquerading as poetry’ churned out by poets of the younger generation. Thirdly, traditional publishers have almost or even completely shunned new poetry; but for the ‘stubborn voices who refuse to be quiet’, poetry may have become extinct in the book market by now! And why short fiction? Of the other genres and sub-genres of Literature, short fiction is the closest to poetry (and Senator Ihenyen does have a certain bias for poetry)! Better reasons?

Of course – most publishers out there are more interested in long fiction – novels. So gradually, attention is relatively turning away from short stories. Poets who will realise that ‘poetry does not sell’ may find a relatively ‘safe-landing’ when they write and publish short stories. Drama, of course, has been on stage, so go playwriting at the theatre! I do not intend to change the face of new Nigerina poetry, as far as my generation is concerned. Not at all! I am not a Nobel Laureate, nor have I won NLNG’s $50,000.00 to afford it! I don’t even have a book to show for it! What I hope to do is make possible information that can help the younger generation of Nigerian writers push forward accessible, if they are prepared to move themselves

Briefly, although these links will be continually updated, it features very useful and helpful writing resources, such as a one-stop resource centre, Poetry Magic, for the theory and craft of writing poetry, featuring expository materials on general writing topics like imagery, creative writing, publicising your work etc. You also have access to materials on publishing under such topics like Print-on- Demand (POD), publishing a book, self-publishing, magazines and ezines etc; including an Advance section for literary theory and poets on poets and languages!

Dailywritingtips.com is another invaluable resource for writers, especially short fiction writers! Get resources on fiction writing with such materials like ‘Even Talent Requires Revision’, ‘Don’t Be Too Eager to Publish’, ‘Show Don’t Tell’, ‘Creative Writing 101′ and many more; Writing Basics has a great archive for various categories of writing, such as ‘How to Revise, Edit and Proofread your Writing’, ‘You are What you Read’ and others. It will be greatly rewarding for him if you use them and gradually evolve your own voice over time! Have fun!!!

The same website features grammar, a very useful archive for various categories of grammatical lessons. As constructors of language, materials such as ‘Warning: Microsoft Did Not Invent Grammar’, ‘Smart People, Bad Grammar’, ‘Six Rules for Making Subjects and Verbs Agree’ and many more, are very valuable for effective communication. It also contains Business Writing, an archive with materials for writers who want to climb up the literary ladder in a global village like ours where there is an increasing need for effective communication especially through the electronic media. Materials like ‘Conversational Email’, ‘Email Etiquette’, ‘Clichés Don’t Belong in Professional Writing’ and many others should be of great use to the writer who wants to minimise the number of rejection slips he must get while seeking publishing.

As a wordsmith, the archives on vocabulary, spellings can immensely expand and enhance your use and control of words. In creative writing, it is often how you say whatever you want to say that matters more. No single word in the English language is perfectly replaceable as far as writing imaginatively is concerned. This is why you badly need a thesaurus! And Thesaurus.com is more than just giving you the synonyms of any English word! It also has a dictionary, encyclopaedia and translator. Recently, I used this translator to reply a Spanish visitor to my webblog who had dropped a message for me in Spanish, having seen my works in Literatur Ad Art, a literary blog in Barcelona! In a global village, the need to be able to communicate with anyone from any part of the world is not a joke! Finally, Rhymzone finds similar-sounding words that rhyme, and also defines the word, finds the consonant, spelling, traces the word in any of Shakespeare’s works, and even search for relevant quotations where the searched word occurs! What else do you need to write a masterpiece? Me? No way! I am off to getting more resources for you! Have fun, keep writing!

The Fishermen, the Fishes and the Fishing Nets in New Nigerian Poetry- Senator Ihenyen

“If a publisher is unwilling to take your manuscript, it is perhaps the script is not good enough. You should not run to the local printer, pay him because you believe in yourself. If you believe in yourself, look for somebody else who also believes in you, and can tell you the truth. That yes, you are a good writer, you have the potentials but these are flaws in your writing.” – Prof. Dan Izevbaye on the eve of announcing the Nigeria Literature Prize, 2009.

For too long, the new generation of Nigerian writers, particularly poets, have been continually criticised for stubbornly producing poor works, which according to our literary critics, do not deserve any attention. The degenerating generation of new writers are accused of being ‘too much in a hurry’ to get published and consequently compromising publishing standards. In turn, the ‘children of globalisation’ are quick to point accusing fingers at the publishers, particularly the long-established, for robbing Peter (neglecting new creative works by new writers) to pay Paul (publishing established authors and educational titles). Has anyone got anything to say about this degeneration? Of course, everyone in the book industry in Nigeria does!

The publishers claim that if they are to stay in business new writers must be seen as a big risk, while the literary critics seem to be saying that new writers must be rightly starved to death since their largely poor works do not feed their literary hunger for great literature. Usually too glad to see that the go-it-alone new authors are paying the price for sidetracking professional editing services, the editors are always quick to nod their heads in agreement with the critics! Down the book-chain, the booksellers say that because Nigerians have a poor reading culture, literary books don’t even sell anymore! And what has the book reader got to say (if they still read at all based on what the booksellers hare saying)? The book reader says literary books are not available in the bookstores; and when they rarely are, they are not affordable; and when they are rarely affordable, they are not accessible; and when again they are accessible, they are not good literature like it used to be in the Soyinka days! On their part, literary journalists are making headlines to the effect that literary critics who continue their endless romance with Soyinka, Okara, Clark, Osundare and the other lucky few without a look at new writers are to blame. Phew! Or have you got something to say as well?

But in the same vein, literary critics who are from the Soyinka generation are wondering why there is a scarcity of critics from the same generation that has been ‘too much in a hurry’ to produce works. They believe that with the wild and wide sea of new Nigerian writers, waves of fresher and younger literary critics who are better placed to do the job considering ‘age and energy’ should come with it! According to Nnolim, ‘…younger critics are lazy. I called them lazy because when we were younger, we wrote about Achebe, Soyinka; these were the icons of Literature in the 1970s and 1980s…’ The accusing fingers in contemporary Nigerian literature, particularly poetry, are endless! Faced with this situation, the young and upcoming Nigerian writer has become even more confused: running to Lulu and others for self-publishing, or worse still paying a roadside printer, or more honourably taking Nigerian literature abroad! The consequences have been simply dimensional: the good, the bad and the ugly.

There have always been poor works –no doubt – even Soyinka’s generation did not lack it. The critical issue is fishing out good works for publishing. And unfortunately, we presently lack, largely, good fishing nets in the literary industry spread out by good and experienced fishermen to catch good fishes. To extend this metaphor a bit further, those long-established and experienced publishers in Nigeria who are the fishermen with good fishing nets have refused to spread their nets further into the sea of new writers because the new fishes are easily caught in water but not easily sold on land. So they hunt for big ones found deeper ashore – they find the very big Achebe, Soyinka, Okara and other lucky giants. Also, newer and less experienced publishers, with little nets go fishing in the same water, not for the Soyinkas, but for other fishes with some pedigree and great potentials to become bigger with a little fish-feed (they probably caught me). And once in a while, you find some ‘fishermen’ without out nets at all, desperately jump into water to catch the fishes at shore, usually small (probably you this time), while many are not fishes at all, but fish-looking frogs fanning their fins (probably who?)! But in the same sea, many fishes are left behind. And in frustration, they soon become ‘too much in a hurry’ to get out, thinking a literary life anywhere but in unfulfilling water was going to be better – they jump out of water unto land! However, they soon die for want of water – the self-publishing author who keeps travelling around with the unsold copies of his book in a certain travelling bag that is always heavy (yes, he must have arrived at your destination by now with a bent back)! Please, buy his book before he departs, else you might be forced to pay more during his funeral after years of no reward for intellect in a country that ‘does not have a reading culture’.

Not every fish must be big when caught. Achebe was a small fish when the fisherman called Heinemann caught him with their fishing net, African Writers Series. One rarely finds a ready made fish except that fish has since been caught and fed by another fisherman who was nurturing him for the bigger market, but one way or the other found himself in the sea again, bigger but still fresh. So the question is do we still have fishermen who have good fishing nets? Not whether there are fishes or too many of them, or there are fish-feigning frogs in this very wide sea of Nigerian writers. Everyone wants be the big fish, but not everyone has fed well. I am not quite comfortable with a situation where Nigerian writers are stoned whenever another bad work ends up in the book stands. In Law, we usually say nemo judex in causa sua (no one can be a judge in his own course). Writers cannot themselves set literary standards to measure their works for the purpose of validating themselves for recognition. The reason we have what we usually describe as ‘too many writers’ is because there is no standard in the industry to separate the boys from the men, as there will always be boys if there must be men. The young shall grow is the instructive message here, but of course many have died and still dying from the impoverished literary industry, causing us future Achebes, Okigbos, Soyinkas, Ben Okri, Osundares and many others. Perhaps, the way to go for young Nigerian writers is to stick to Prof. Izevdaye’s advice: “If a publisher is unwilling to
